Understanding Saphenous Vein Problems
The saphenous veins are superficial veins that help carry blood from the legs back toward the heart. When the valves inside these veins become weak, blood may begin to flow backward instead of moving efficiently upward.
This condition is known as saphenous vein insufficiency or venous reflux. It can affect the great saphenous vein along the inner leg or the small saphenous vein along the back of the calf.
When blood pools in the lower legs, pressure builds inside the veins. This can lead to enlarged varicose veins, swelling, discomfort, and changes in the skin around the ankle or calf.
