Understanding Saphenous Vein Problems

The saphenous veins are superficial veins that help carry blood from the legs back toward the heart. When the valves inside these veins become weak, blood may begin to flow backward instead of moving efficiently upward.

This condition is known as saphenous vein insufficiency or venous reflux. It can affect the great saphenous vein along the inner leg or the small saphenous vein along the back of the calf.

When blood pools in the lower legs, pressure builds inside the veins. This can lead to enlarged varicose veins, swelling, discomfort, and changes in the skin around the ankle or calf.

Why This Matters for Foot and Ankle Health

Vein problems do not only affect the appearance of the legs. Poor venous circulation can contribute to symptoms that podiatry patients often notice first, including ankle swelling, lower-leg heaviness, skin irritation, and wounds that are slow to heal.

For patients with diabetes, circulation concerns, or chronic foot and ankle conditions, identifying vein insufficiency early can be an important part of protecting long-term lower-extremity health.

Signs You May Have Venous Insufficiency

You may benefit from a vein evaluation if you have:

These symptoms may develop gradually and are often worse after standing for long periods.

Risk Factors

Several factors can increase the likelihood of developing saphenous vein insufficiency, including:
A professional evaluation can help determine whether symptoms are caused by vein disease, a podiatric issue, or another lower-extremity condition.

Diagnosis

At Abacoa Podiatry & Leg Vein Center, evaluation may include a physical examination, review of symptoms, and assessment of the legs, ankles, feet, and visible veins.
If venous reflux is suspected, ultrasound testing may be recommended to study blood flow and locate the affected vein segments. This allows the provider to choose the most appropriate treatment approach.

Treatment Approach

Treatment may include conservative care, compression therapy, lifestyle guidance, or minimally invasive procedures designed to close or treat problem veins.

Depending on the diagnosis, options may include:

The focus is to reduce symptoms, improve circulation, and support better lower-extremity wellness.
