Endovenous laser therapy (EVLT) treats varicose veins with laser energy delivered from inside the vein itself — no incision-heavy surgery, no hospital stay, and for most patients, no real downtime. It's become the preferred option for varicose veins caused by malfunctioning valves.
How it actually works
Varicose veins form when the valves inside a leg vein weaken, letting blood pool and the vein enlarge and bulge under the skin — a condition known as chronic venous insufficiency. EVLT addresses that directly: a thin laser fiber delivered into the vein heats its walls from the inside, causing them to collapse and seal shut. Blood already flowing through that vein reroutes through healthy veins nearby, and the sealed vein is gradually reabsorbed by the body over time.
What procedure day looks like
Before treatment, a consultation and duplex ultrasound assess the vein and confirm the treatment plan. On the day itself: the leg is cleaned and prepped, a local anesthetic numbs the area, and a catheter is guided into the vein through a small incision (usually near the knee) under ultrasound guidance. The laser fiber passes through the catheter and is activated as the physician slowly withdraws it, sealing the vein along its length — typically taking 20 to 60 minutes depending on how many veins are being treated. A compression bandage or stocking follows, and patients are encouraged to walk right away to support circulation.

Risk factors like prolonged standing, sedentary work, hormonal changes, genetics, or prior pregnancy all increase the likelihood of needing treatment. Smaller spider veins often need a complementary treatment like sclerotherapy alongside or instead of EVLT.
What recovery involves
Mild bruising or tenderness for a few days is typical and resolves quickly. Compression stockings are usually worn for one to two weeks, vigorous exercise and hot baths are avoided for several days, and walking is encouraged throughout. A follow-up appointment within a few weeks checks results and addresses any remaining concerns.
