Most wounds heal on their own. The ones that don't — a diabetic ulcer that has sat open for months, a surgical incision that is closing slower than it should — are usually stalled for a specific, treatable reason: not enough blood flow reaching the tissue to fuel repair. MLS laser therapy targets exactly that.
How it actually speeds healing
The mechanism is called photobiomodulation: specific wavelengths of light penetrate the skin and are absorbed by cells, where they increase production of ATP, the energy molecule cells use to repair themselves. More usable energy at the cellular level means faster, more complete tissue regeneration.
Three effects follow from that:
- More blood flow. Laser therapy promotes angiogenesis — the formation of new blood vessels — which is often the actual bottleneck in a wound that has stopped progressing, especially in diabetic patients with compromised circulation.
- Calmer inflammation. Some inflammation is a normal part of healing, but excess swelling delays it. Laser therapy modulates the inflammatory response rather than eliminating it, which keeps healing on schedule instead of stuck.
- Lower infection risk. Better circulation and a properly regulated healing environment make it harder for bacteria to gain a foothold in an open wound.
What it does for scarring
The same mechanism that speeds closure also improves how a wound heals over. Laser therapy can help break down the thick, disorganized collagen bundles that raised or hypertrophic scars are made of, and stimulate new collagen that forms in a more organized pattern — which is the difference between a scar that stays raised and discolored and one that flattens and fades. Improved local circulation also reduces the redness and pigmentation change that lingers after a wound closes.
Starting laser therapy early, while a wound is still healing, generally gets a better scar result than waiting until scar tissue has fully matured. It still helps on older scars, just more gradually.
What responds well
We use laser wound care most often for diabetic foot ulcers, post-surgical incisions that are healing slower than expected, and stubborn venous or pressure wounds. Diabetic ulcers in particular tend to stall for circulatory reasons the laser is well suited to address, which is why it's a core part of our wound care program alongside standard diabetic foot management.
What a session is like
Nothing to prepare beforehand beyond a clean wound and any dressing removed for the session. The device is passed over the treatment area for several minutes; most patients feel gentle warmth and nothing else — no needles, no incisions, no sedation. You walk out and resume your day immediately. Session count depends on the wound's size and how long it has been open: a minor wound might need a handful of visits, while a chronic diabetic ulcer usually needs a longer course with progress checked every few sessions.
