What is minimally invasive bunion surgery?
Minimally invasive (MIS) bunion surgery corrects the bone alignment behind a bunion through several small incisions, often just a few millimeters each. The surgeon uses specialized instruments and watches the correction on live X-ray (fluoroscopy) instead of opening the joint to see it directly.
A bunion is a bone-alignment problem, not a bump sitting on top of the foot. The bone behind the big toe drifts one way and the toe angles the other. Lasting correction means realigning that bone. MIS does that work through smaller openings.
Who is a good candidate?
Many mild and moderate bunions are well suited to a minimally invasive correction. Some bunions do better with a different operation:
- An arthritic big toe joint. If the joint surface itself is worn, realigning the bone won't relieve the pain. A joint procedure may be the right answer instead.
- An unstable first metatarsal. When the bone is loose where it meets the midfoot, a Lapidus fusion is often the more durable fix. Our surgeons perform it when it is indicated.
- A bunion that has come back after surgery. Revision bunion surgery is its own discipline, and it starts with understanding why the first correction failed.
